All habitants in the Netherlands are obliged to have health insurance. The Dutch government determines a basic package but you may purchase an additional insurance for extra treatments. The nominal premium is around Є1,100 per year, to be paid directly to the health insurance company. For children under the age of 18 the standard insurance is free of charge. You are free to choose the health insurance company you wish. The Dutch government has introduced a Health Insurance State Benefits, a so-called care allowance (zorgtoeslag), which is based on your income. This allowance is arranged by the Tax Office.
