The Citizen Service Number (BSN-number) is an exclusive identification number for all citizens in The Netherlands. While the Tax and Social Security Number (Sofinumber) was only for fiscal use, the BSN-number has more possibilities. The BSN-number has the same number as the Sofinumber and will be granted to you as soon as you have been registered in the municipality in The Netherlands. Without a Sofinumber, you are not allowed to work in The Netherlands. However, with to have a Sofinumber does not automatically mean that you may work in The Netherlands. In some situations one must apply for a work permit first.
